INTRODUCTION: Introduction: • Introduction, Chemical Engineering Equipment. An overview of chemical engineering techniques used to solve problems. • Chemical Engineering Stoichiometry. Concept of material and energy balances, gas laws and how to make a process flow sheet. • Flow of Fluids- Liquids and Gases. Introduction to hydraulic fundamentals, friction, pressure drop, pumps and flow measurements. • Flow of Fluids- Pumping and Piping System Design. How to size piping and pumps. • Heat Transfer. Introduction to heat transfer fundamentals and heat exchanger selection and design Overview of computer- aided heat exchanger sizing methods • Introduction to distillation, fundamentals and tower internals selection and design. Distillation operation problems, flooding, channeling, down comer back, entrainment. • Introduction to absorption. Fundamentals and equipment selection and design. • Economics, cost structure (Variable, Fixed, depreciation), cash discount, interest, inflation, net income (profit), margin, incremental production cost, introduction short and long term economical analysis, IRR, NPV, ROE, introduction to pay pack period.
Objectives: • Familiarize yourself with the chemical and physical principles that form the basis for the design of equipment at your site • Learn the terminology used at a processing facility • Understand the functions of key unit operations. • Gain a basic understanding of key concepts like heat and mass transfer, fluid flow, distillation, absorption, filtration and separation, and others.
OUTLINE: Contents: First Day • Introduction: What is Chemical Engineering? - Its relation to other engineering and scientific disciplines. - Brief history of chemical engineering. • Chemical Engineering Balances. - Mass & Energy Balances. Second Day: • Equilibrium in systems with chemical reaction. • Mass Transfer, Distillation equipment. • Heat Transfer, Modes of heat transfer, Simultaneous Heat and Mass Transfer (Evaporation, Condensation, boiling), • Elementary heat exchanger design, the log-mean temperature, co-current v.s. counter current staging, operational problems i.e. fouling, pressure drop, etc. Third Day: • The concept of Unit Operations. - Distillation - Absorption • Distillation column internals • Distillation operation problems - flooding - cross flow channeling - down comer back • Basic flow diagrams of Unit Operations. • Properties of fluids, fluid flow fundamentals, flow in pipes, pumping, mixing. Fourth & Fifth Day: • HAZOP - Case studies. • Economics: - Cost structure (Variable, Fixed, depreciation) - Cash discount (Interest, inflation) - Net income (profit) - Margin - Incremental production cost - Short and long term economical analysis (introduction only) - IRR, NPV, ROE, Pay pack period introduction only • Exercises and Discussions. • Course Evaluation and Summary.
